Caldera mourns the loss of longtime Board Member Nancy Wilgenbusch, who passed away on February 4. Nancy joined Caldera’s Board of Directors in 2004, and in her years on the board made deep contributions to Caldera’s development. With her background in education and as President of Marylhurst University, she was instrumental in helping shape Caldera’s Youth Program as it grew from a summer program to a year-round program.
Ten years ago, Caldera founder Dan Wieden initiated (and continues to fund) a four-year, full-tuition scholarship for a Caldera youth to attend Marylhurst University. In honor of Nancy’s memory, the fund will be renamed the “Nancy Wilgenbusch Caldera Scholarship.”
“Nancy encouraged me to join Caldera’s board and was so great to work with. She had tremendous passion for our mission and was a formidable fundraiser. My husband considered Nancy the sister he never had. We will miss her terribly,” said Caldera Board Member Barbara McDougall, also a long-time friend of Nancy’s. Nancy was an excellent strategist, fundraiser, and champion of the Caldera staff. “I depended on her for ongoing advice and mentoring,” said Tricia Snell, Caldera’s Executive Director. “We met many times for coffee, outside of regular board activities, just to talk. She was ‘always a phone call away,’ as she used to tell me. She was so darn smart, lively, and loving; our meetings always began with updates about her children and grandchildren, and ended with my walking away with a host of ideas for how to tackle various problems. I will miss her dearly.”
An obituary can be found here.
Nancy’s final generous gesture was to donate her tissue and corneas to others; two blind people will be able to see, and as many as sixty people will be helped by her tissue donation. Her family encourages everyone to become a donor.
While there are no services planned, anyone wanting to honor Nancy can consider making a memorial donation to: Center for Interstitial Lung Disease, University of Washington c/o Dr. Ganesh Raghu, Box 356166, Medical Specialties, 1959 NE Pacific St., Seattle, WA. 98195. Checks should be made out to UW Center for ILD and “in memory of Nancy Wilgenbusch” should be added in the “Re” line of the check. Contact phone, if needed, is 206-598-4967.
