Artists in Residence: 2012 Open Studios Announced

By Katie Weinstein

Three Saturdays a year Caldera, Artist in Residence participants open their studios for the community to come peek inside and experience the artistic process. These Open Studios give the public an intimate look at the artistic process of 15 exceptional professional artists including poets, filmmakers, and dancers from across the country. The Caldera Open Studios are free and open to the public January 28, February 25, and March 24 from 1-3 PM.

Upcoming Open Studios for 2012 are January 28, February 25, and March 24, from 1-3 P.M. Open Studios take place in Caldera’s beautiful Arts Center at Blue Lake, just west of the town of Sisters, Oregon.

Open Studios showcase the works-in-progress of artists who have been awarded four-week stays at Blue Lake through Caldera’s Artist in Residence program. The artists, who have been selected through an application and jurying process, stay in a private cottage during their residency and work in a studio or work space at Caldera’s Arts Center.

Featured January artists are poet J. Hope Stein, visual artist Ann Lovett, writer Ben Moorad, visual Artist, and dancer collaboration Suniti Dernovsek/ David Stein, and visual artist Jerry Monteith. February artists include poet Harvey Hix, visual artist Erin Beaver, writer Leanne Hall, performer Kate Sanderson Holly, and visual artist Erik Peterson. March presents poet Ahimsa Bodhran, composer and musician Sean Frenette, writer Kristin Steel, fiber artist Jerry Flom, and photographer/installation artist/filmmaker Vanessa Renwick.

On January 28, February 25, and March 24 studios will be open for self-guided tours as well as scheduled talks with the artists at 1:20 P.M. Enjoy refreshments and a warm fire in Caldera’s Hearth Arts Center as part of the Open Studio tradition. These events are informal, friendly, and often surprising. Each month will be a different experience!

In addition to the Open Studio events, some artists in Caldera’s Residency Program contribute to Caldera’s Youth Program by visiting students in classrooms throughout Central Oregon. In addition, some of the artists in the program create workshops and presentations for the Central Oregon community.
