The fireplaces in Caldera’s Arts Center roared as people came in from a wet, cloudy February day to enjoy an afternoon of warmth and creativity. Visitors became neighbors and friends as everyone greeted one another in the Hearth Building and then filled the library for Open Studios.
The afternoon started with Helen Dennis, a photographer from Brooklyn, who explained how she works in photography techniques that allow here to do large-scale public art projects. Collaborators Jason Baker and Elsbeth Pancrazi, writers from Brooklyn, read poems they created together during their residency at Caldera. Two unique and beautiful short films by Portland filmmaker Joanna Priestley’s were shown. Roger Peet, printmaker from Portland, presented slides of his work and a music video made during his recent trip to Congo to volunteer for an effort to create Congo’s first National Park. Presentations were finished off with the lovely and true voice of singer, songwriter Laura Gibson of Portland.
Afterwards everyone was invited to the studios to see work created over the month at Caldera. Roger Peet shared a printmaking technique by asking anyone interested to walk over a carved block print to contribute to the pressure needed to make a print. People danced over the block, walked, laughed, and shared stories. See pictures from the day on our facebook page here.
In the evening after Open Studios, all of the artists were invited to Camp Sherman to celebrate with guests of House on Metolius. The evening was special with more stimulating conversations, song, poetry, and friendships forged.
The next Open Studios at Caldera is March 23 from 1 – 3pm. Once again, House on Metolius is offering a special evening after Open Studios. For more intimate conversation with Caldera’s Artists in Residence, guests can attend a reception and three-course dinner with wine pairings for $45 per person. A night’s stay in the serenity and luxury of House on Metolius after dinner is also available for a special rate of $119 (dbl occupancy). To make reservations call 541.595.6620.
